The High Schools

Why does the foundation choose the High Schools that they choose?

In the past, scholarships were awarded to Modesto High School and Luther Burbank High School. In the case of Modesto High School, the decision to award scholarships was simple.  This was Vu's alma mater.  Modesto High School is centrally located in the community where Vu grew up and plays a large role in the identity of that community.  That community, located on the West Side of Modesto, struggles with the problems that our foundation works to fight against: drugs, gangs, and street violence.  We have been awarding scholarships at Modesto High School from the foundation's inception in 2008. Making a difference in that community, in Vu's community, is our honor.

In 2011, the foundation decided to award scholarships to deserving students from Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento, California.  Vu Nguyen was stationed and held a desk at the Sacramento Sheriff sub-station that served this area of Sacramento.  This is the area where Vu worked to improve his community.  Vu ultimately gave his life in the vicinity of 37th Street and 41st Avenue, which is about 2 miles from the high school.  Awarding scholarships to deserving students who live in this area not only pays honor to Vu's memory, but also helps to continue his work of improving the community he cared so much about.

The foundation is focusing its current efforts on the Criminal Justice Academies at Grant, John F. Kennedy, and McClatchy high schools in Sacramento.  The students in these academies are working towards a career in law enforcement, which is a focus of the foundation.  The students from these high schools are in the communities that Vu's work and legacy impacted, and the foundation is honored to help these communities while continuing to make an impact in Vu's name.
